The Big Twin model was manufactured for 18 years, from 1966 to 1984. If the Sportster model Iron Shovel is included, it was manufactured for a total of 29 years, from 1957 to 1986.
Harley-Davidson always gives unique names to its engines, and the name Shovelhead comes from the Japanese word for shovel. It’s a little hard to tell from the front, but if you look at it from above, you’ll probably think, “Ah, it kind of looks like a shovel.” It has firmly inherited the mechanical coolness and beautiful design of previous models.
The Shovelhead is the third generation of Harley OHVs. The Shovel was born in 1957. It was originally installed as an engine for the Sportster. The Shovelhead Big Twin was born in 1966, nine years after the Sportster. In fact, during this time, the motorcycle world was undergoing a major upheaval. That’s right, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers (Honda, Kawasaki, etc.) were manufacturing and selling cheap, high-performance machines, and foreign manufacturers, including Harley Davidson, were struggling. Japanese 4-cylinder engines were driving out foreign products with their high power and high manufacturing precision.
